HomTom S8 Review – Frameless Phablet with Dual Rear Camera
Chinese manufacturers are able to quickly and flexibly adopt trends, established by eminent manufacturers. An example of this is the new smartphone HomTom S8 with a display format 18: 9, which recognizes the features of the flagship Samsung. Hence the non-standard resolution of a 5.7-inch screen – 1440 x 720 pixels. The general equipment of the smartphone also differs decent level: 8-core processor MediaTek MT6750T, 4 GB of operative and 64 GB of internal memory.
HomTom S8: Design
The HomTom S8 is a front-end design to the flagship of Samsung. To the left and right, it is almost borderless, whereby the display dominates the front. Physical buttons cannot be found, they are all on-screen. The fingerprint sensor is located on the back and also cheaper than the original. With the Samsung S8, it is hardly reachable in the one hand operation, with the HomTom S8 it is below the dual cam. For the connections at the bottom of the smartphone you use a 3.5mm AUX socket and micro-USB; why not set to USB Type-C?
HomTom S8 has a size of 152.0 x 72.5 x 7.9 mm and a weight of 180 g. The smartphone is available in four colors: Coral Blue, Maple Gold, Arctiv Silver, and Midnight Black.
The design of the Samsung Galaxy S8 is quite successful and also the format brings its advantages with it! When the HomTom S8 can fill the given space just as well with a display, then one can designate the copy of the design as successful. If we also find it a little unfortunate that the manufacturer would like to contribute to the prestige of the S8 – its own identity with the HomTom S8 would certainly have liked us better.
HomTom S8: Display
HomTom sets the S8 on a display in the 18: 9 format, as well as Samsung. The format has the advantage that the left-hand edge of the screen – left-handers please rethink – can still be achieved with one hand. So the 5.7 “inches for a display are not a little but can be accommodated in the device space saving. Also, the HT S8 offers rounded edges on the edges of 2.5D glass for it to work Edgeless.
However, we are looking at the resolution: 1440 x 720. This means 282 PPI – not even Retina resolution. The Samsung S8 offers twice as many pixels per inch! This shows the difference from a flagship to a budget copy. A little comfort: A lower resolution needs less power.
HomTom S8: Power
The heart of the HomTom S8 is the MediaTek MT6750 processor. The octa-core offers two performance clusters: four ARM-A53 cores clock with 1.5GHz, the other four A53 cores with 1.0GHz. The SoC is supported by 4GB RAM and the Mali-T860 GPU. In practice, the smartphone should come to 40,000 to 45,000 points in the AnTuTu benchmark. The performance does not travel through trees but is armed against all everyday tasks. For comparison, the Ulefone Power 2 offers the same hardware as the HomTom S8. HomTom S8 has 64 GB of memory, which can be extended by the hybrid slot.
HomTom S8: Camera
The smartphone comes as usual with a dual camera setup. The main camera features a 16MP Sony sensor as well as the second sensor with 5MP. We do not expect good bokeh recordings from the dual cam setup; Marketing wins quality here. Nevertheless, the standard recordings can be good, but the HomTom S8 has yet to prove. The front camera promises selfies with 13 Megapixel resolution.
HomTom S8: Connectivity
The smartphone should provide everything necessary for the use. All important networks and LTE frequencies are supported. As already mentioned, the HT S8 has a hybrid slot: either dual SIM (2 x Nano-SIM) or a memory expansion via microSD card. Furthermore, Dual Band Wifi, Bluetooth 4.0 and GPS/A-GPS on board. Only the three standards are available for sensors.
HomTom S8: Battery
The smartphone has a 3400mAh battery installed. With the 5.7-inch display with HD resolution as well as the somewhat weakly breakthrough CPU, the smartphone should surely bring you about the day. Between 3 and 5 hours of display-on-time should be feasible. Charging is carried out via the quick charge function with 5V/2A.
HomTom S8: Price
The HomTom S8 promises to be a reasonable budget smartphone. If you look at the design of the Samsung S8, HomTom is a cost-effective alternative. Too bad is that HomTom with the S8 no own identity builds.
HomTom S8 is available on Gearbest for $ 159.99.
